Children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who don't, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations.

Red Ribbon Week Success Story

By Amy Goldstein on 12/02/2013 @ 09:58 PM

Red Ribbon Week just ended and it was a huge success. How do we know it was a success, other than seeing the millions of people participating from all over the country? Stories like these...

Morgan McNally, a Candidate for M.Ed in Counseling at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, sent us a note which demonstrated her enthusiasm and appreciation for the National Family Partnership's efforts in sponsoring and organizing Red Ribbon Week across the country. McNally is doing her internship at the Queens Lake Middle School in York County. This is the first year that Queens Lake Middle has participated in the Red Ribbon Week Campaign and she wrote to share her success story. She told us about the many fun and creative activities she organized at the school. She went on to talk about the demonstrative effectiveness of the campaign. Here's what she had to say:

"Alcohol and drugs are a really hard topic to bring up in schools and often administration and parents do not want to address the issue at all. I cannot express enough how instrumental campaigns such as Red Ribbon Week can be in the lives of students. Since RRW we have had students coming into the counseling office to talk about drug related issues in their lives and express how they didn’t realize something like spice could be as dangerous as more “hard core” drugs. These conversations are ones that need to be happening year round but this was a really great start. We plan to have our students sign the pledge every year and to infuse more activity to raise awareness into our Red Ribbon Week."

Stories like these are perfect examples of the potential of Red Ribbon Week to make a real difference at the home, school and community level.

When he joined the DEA, Kiki Camarena said, "I am only one person, but I want to make a difference." Individuals like Morgan, and those of you reading this message, carry on Kiki's legacy with your passion for helping our children live safe, healthy and drug free lives. Thank you for your dedication.

Do you have a Red Ribbon Week success story that demonstrates the effectiveness of our combined efforts? Send it to and we'll highlight it.
